9th World Wilderness Congress in Merida

By Marti Johnson

Hola!
Last month I had the privilege to attend the 9th World Wilderness Congress in Merida with the generous sponsorship of Akumal Villas and support from Mary Henderson, Ixchel Boutique and the Lol Ha Friday Happy Hour gang, and some Jen (Turtle Bay) fairy dust! The reason I wished to attend was a focus on Mexico and water.....so important. This is a link to my report through the Akumal Villas website www.akumal-villas.com/index.php Basically, it is my notes for the day with comments and thoughts.
Or you can click here to open the PDF.

The key thing I wanted to hear was that the federal government is committed to protecting the fresh water of the underground river system. President Calderon addressed the protection of water and mangroves in an earlier speech during opening ceremonies and was quoted by the CONAGUA presenter during the morning keynote panel. The SEMARNAT presenter specified the underground rivers in the Yucatan. Throughout the day was the constant theme of climate change pointing to maintaining biospheres, forests, jungles, watersheds, wilderness places and species.

Recently Paul Sanchez-Navarro posted that 8000 hectares of jungle were slated to come down as part of the development plans for the region. If you feel as if there is something you must do, try this: send a message to President Calderon through his website http://contacto.presidencia.gob.mx/contacto/

Below is a list of other government officials to write to.....Below is the message I sent:

Regarding the Copenhagen conference, and referencing WILD9, I urge you to do all that is in your power to halt the planned destruction of jungle and mangrove in Quintana Roo. Between the mangrove, the underground water beneath the jungle, and the Mesoamerican reef, the far reaching impact of the devastation that will be wrought in the name of development dollars is criminal. Please honor the pledges you made during WILD9, be the visionaries and leaders the world needs at this time.

Sincerely,
A concerned world citizen
Marti Johnston
