news

Big news around Akumal was that Jennifer Lopez was staying in and filming near Akumal following her filming in Chichén Itzá.

Dr. Nestor has opened a 24-hour clinic in Akumal Pueblo that is fully staffed with doctors 24/7.

Tequillaville Restaurant in Akumal Pueblo announced that since 1925, Día del Niño, or Day of the Child, has grown as an annual celebration throughout Mexico. This day recognizes children, pays homage to their importance in society, and endorses their well being. So, in this tradition they are going to be hosting a Día del Niño fiesta at the restaurant for local kids on April 30. They are going to have a piñata, play some games and have treats!! They are asking for donations for toys for prizes, because they want all the children who come to end up with something to take home. If you know of anyone coming to the area, please let them know. Cash donations will also be welcome as the owners can go out and purchase some toys as well.

If you would like to see a ferry service from Tampa to the Yucatán and Cuba, please take a moment and e-mail your answers to this short questionnaire.

Christmas Tree Worms

Company Coming - by Barb Eller
We got a message from Patrick's daughter: "We are coming down for a visit." Great! We have been inviting them for a couple of years and they finally decided on the spur of the moment to pack their bags and hop on a plane. ... The first three days we saw nothing but dark clouds and rough water because of high winds. Everyone was disappointed about not being able to get in the water so we did some sightseeing in the area...

Casa de los Venados in Valladolid, MX

Casa de los Venados - by Marieke White of Akumal Direct
On a weekend excursion this weekend, we had the pleasure of visiting the most incredible place! Casa de los Venados in Valladolid. This is 400-year-old 18,000 sq. ft. private home/museum of Mexican folk and contemporary art owned by an American couple who spent nearly 10 years renovating this masterpiece of colonial architecture.

To experience a little more, Marieke also shared this video from Yucatan Living.

Mortgage Interest Rates in Mexico Drop - by Enrique (Henry) Saldana
One of the main lenders for purchasing property in Mexico has dropped their interest rates to 5.25% ARM and 7.0% 30 yr. fixed rate, meanwhile the other lender, while toughening up some of their credit requirements, allows a more lenient and creative process for Americans and Canadians purchasing property in Mexico. But which is better, a lower credit rate, or a less stringent process?

Hekab Be Library Update - by Eleanor Zucker - We are very pleased to announce the beginning of our “Library Angels” program. This program has been created to encourage folks to become monthly sponsors of the library... We are working hard to plan for the future of Hekab Be and this program is one of the steps we are taking to ensure that the library will be in Akumal, for all of the children who want to attend for many years to come.

Mahahual
eyeclinic in Mahahual, MX

Vision Help in Mahahual – A very special lady, Tara Shields, has become a regular visitor to Mahahual bringing opticians and optometrists every year to assess the children and adults in town.

Here is a note from her:
"I am so thankful for the help of Dr. Colleen King and the optician, Lindsey Gifford, without whom the clinic would not be possible. Most of the time during the clinic there were at least 20 people in line waiting to see Dr. King. She worked diligently for about 11 hours the first day, about 10 hours the second, and she only took about a 10-minute break. We saw 158 patients in 2 days!!! These two women took off work from their busy jobs in order to help with this mission. Dr. Jim Horning and Rainy, who have helped in years past, are also helping get prescriptions made that will be brought back soon. I will be posting more pictures and info on the In Lak'ech Facebook page."

Check out In Lak'ech on Facebook to see her work in Mexico and other countries. Now Tara is fundraising to help build a playground for the school at km 55.

Thanks to Carol at Balamku Inn for sharing this story.
