"Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate!"
We know a lot of emotions run high when people care deeply about an issue, but we want to go on record to state we will not publish any bashing. If you have good news and positive solutions, we are happy to promote any news that helps make Paradise a little better. With that in mind, it is the beginning of turtle season so like we do every year, here are a few tips on what to do to protect the turtles.

It's official! Akumal now is a protected Fish Refuge. On April 14 SAGARPA declared a new fishing sanctuary. It is a move in the right direction to help protect this area.

What's New

To help keep up on local news in Akumal, be sure to visit AkumalNow. To read what is new and happening up and down the coast, check out Buy Playa Events.

Rosie and the Sleeping Giant is a semi-true story as seen through the frightened eyes of a little dog, Rosie, who experienced the wrath of Hurricane Wilma, "the Sleeping Giant." She emerged out of the Maya jungle near Tulum, Mexico, and found herself on the grounds of a natural paradise, La Selva Mariposa. The vibrant illustrations will bring Rosie's story to life. Learn the names of local trees and birds and a bit of Spanish and Mayan, as well as how Rosie survived the peril of the Sleeping Giant. Look for this on Amazon; it is written by our contributing writer Mari Pintkowski.

In March's Newsletter we linked to CEA's Open Letter. Here is the Response to that letter, submitted to us by Paul Sánchez-Navarro, former CEA Director and now consultant.

Charles Shaw, former CEA Director, has published a paper on the Yucatán Tsunami that hit 1,500 years ago. We still remember going on his Geology Walks and learning about this.

Pets of the Month

Mocha was rescued from a busy street in Playa. She was seen begging at stores, and she had a very bad limp. When she was brought into the shelter, it was determined that she had been hit by a car, breaking her leg, and it had already healed badly. Mocha doesn’t let it stop her from getting around, and ruling all the dogs in her pen! She is healthy, happy and ready for a family of her own.

Please consider adopting, or fostering one of our animals at Playa Animal Rescue; they all deserve a loving home. All sponsorships and donations go towards the medical needs, vaccinations, and daily care and feeding of our animals. Please help us help them! For more information about Mocha or any of the dogs of PAR, please email Pat at pat@playaanimalrescue.org.

A Dolphin's Story

Since her birth in 1958 (estimated), Gabrielle swam free in a tightly knit pod of other dolphins, likely comprised of family and friends. Her name would have been different then, being identified by a signature whistle and other unique characteristics. But sometime between 1963 and 1972, that all would change, when she was—without her consent—captured from her wild waters for a life of captivity. Read more.
