Azul Riviera Review

by Lydia Linton Pontius (February 2013)

Rent the whole villa or have the pleasure of staying in one of three suites and enjoy the Bed & Breakfast atmosphere.

We have known about this property for years. It belongs to good friends, Kathy and Jim. From the first time I saw it, I wanted to stay there but never had a group that quite fit. The beauty of its being a B&B is if you can't fill all the rooms and all the beds, you can still enjoy this jewel.

It isn't one of the most modern villas in the Riviera Maya; as a matter of fact, it has been around for a while and holds the charm of some of the original villas in Akumal. It has a warmth and feel that immediately draw you in.

I happen to love the feel of a hacienda, and this has the combination of an old Mexican hacienda combined with a beach villa. I prefer the "show" of a place to be what you find inside, not the curb appeal. Driving up to Azul Riviera  it looks rather unimposing, but once you walk through the door and into the large entryway with a huge living area, spiral stairway and French doors out to an amazing courtyard, you are hooked.

I don't know why this place affects me like it does; maybe it is the eclectic décor and murals, or the spaciousness that somehow make you feel warm and cozy, or could it be the perfect combination of family living areas and privacy?

There are 4 bedrooms, three of which are suites. All have their own privacy but easy access to the communal parts of the house. Two of the suites have lofts with additional sleeping, so you could bring friends or family and share one suite, making this very affordable.

Suite A: Brisas de la Mar (Sea Breezes), front ground floor, king bed, 2 twins in loft & queen sofa bed.
$165.00 a night for 2 adults & 1 child (will sleep 5, but extra person rate is $15 per person each day).
Add children's small bedroom to this rental for $50.00 a night (sleeps 2).

Suite B: del Pescados y Tortugas (Fish & Turtles)
Ground floor, garden/pool & lagoon views. Has Jacuzzi & bidet.
$180.00 a night for 3: king bed, 2 twins in large loft & daybed on ground level
Will sleep 5; there is a $25 per person fee for over 3, each day.

Suite C: Alturas del Pirámide (Pyramid Heights)
2nd floor, master suite king bed and private balcony.
$150.00, sleeps 2.

The communal areas are wonderful. Wander up the spiral staircase and you will find a very special spot complete with seating and day bed. It is a glassed room with a 360º view of jungle, lagoon and the ocean. A perfect spot to get away from it all, read a book or, early in the morning or at dusk, do some birdwatching.

The living and dining area is large and comfortable with a flat-screen TV and small bar. The kitchen is perfect for cooks; however if you don't feel like cooking, the staff will take care of your meals for you with extra financial arrangements.

The outside area consists of a lovely courtyard, gorgeous landscaping, covered outside bar and dining area, wonderful pool, seating area near the lagoon along the walkway or, if you wander to the end, there is plenty of lounging beneath a palapa at the edge of Yal-Ku Lagoon.

Another wonderful aspect of staying at Azul Riviera is the hospitality shown by Miguel. He was so gracious and welcoming and the breakfast he prepared was wonderful! You know he loves this property,
because the entire time we were there, he was so carefully attending to the plants. Another plus to us is that this is a pet-friendly property!
