Exercise your right to stay green. Within the quaint coastal village of Akumal, a wide variety of options exist in the realm of accommodations. From simple hotel rooms to elaborate private villas, there is something for every budget of traveler. But what if you are a “green” traveler? How do your select the most environmentally friendly option from the tantalizing sea of beachfront choices? One of the current projects of 2007 that is underway at Centro Ecológico Akumal will provide just that answer.
Introducing the Certification for Eco-friendly Hotels, Condos, and Businesses in Akumal, a locally based certification effort that allows the actions of area businesses to determine their eco-worthiness. Including hotels, condos, villas, and all other non-restaurant businesses, this is a completely voluntary certification that CEA has outlined in a year-by-year format to help these businesses ease into a greener way of life. And, as with all new certifications, there needs to be a model business to get the ball rolling.
Enter Luna Azul Condominiums, the first Akumal business to eagerly volunteer to meet CEA’s requirements for good standings in their ecological ratings. After a thorough review, CEA will present Luna Azul with the ‘to-do’ list for the first year, and it will be up to Luna Azul to work diligently to transform their property to comply with the eco-friendly standards. And, considering their earnest desire to be the model, I think there exists a genuine desire among the owners of Luna Azul Condos to help preserve the natural beauty of Akumal.

Pending success in Akumal’s Hotels, Condos, and Businesses receptiveness to join the ranks of Luna Azul, CEA hopes to expand this certification to include restaurants in the future.
