February 2015 – #83

Up & Down the Coast

Happy Valentine's Day to all our friends, family, supporters, contributors and first-time readers!

February is a very busy time for vacationers and we want to remind everyone to take only photos and leave only footsteps! We know that sounds cliché but this is such a fragile and unique area that we want everyone to do what they can to help protect its beauty and natural resources. Remember, even that shell on the beach that you leave may become some creature's much-needed home. Nature recycles—let's do the same. Bring a cloth shopping bag from home or buy one to use, and reduce the need for plastic. And please—no fishing unless you are with a guide and doing it in an approved location. Akumal Bay and many other locations do not allow fishing. (photo by David Nuñez)

The Good Works keep on coming!  Jose Vasconcelos, Telesecundaria de Akumal; Profr. Ajejo Castillo Tamay, Director; Sr. Habram Rejón Tún, Delegado de Akumal; Sra. Reina María Canul Pech, Presidenta de la Sociedad de Padres de Familia; and Biol. Lidia Rosas M, Educación Ambiental del Centro Ecológico de Akumal were all at the Superbowl Fundraiser held at Lolha Restaurant and Snack Bar. A very special thank-you, Marcy Essy and Charlene Powell! Without the help of kind and giving people, this would not have been such a success! The total raised was $40,300 pesos and Laura Bush's matching fund made it $80,600 pesos! The funds are for Akumal's Telesecundaria's lunchroom project and improvements!

Pets of the Month

Bonnie

Bonnie was born about January 2013 and arrived at the shelter in August 2013. She weighs about 17kg, is spayed and up to date on all vaccinations. Bonnie is a medium-size adult dog. She was rescued along with her mother and 3 of her siblings by a Playa local. All of them were suffering with skin problems upon arrival, but all have since received successful treatments. The local rescuer has managed to find homes for all of this pack, except Bonnie, and so she has been with us since August 2013. Bonnie used to be nervous around new people, but now she is confident and outgoing. She loves to go for long walks and to play! She is 100% ready for a family of her own.

Please consider adopting, or fostering one of our animals at Playa Animal Rescue; they all deserve a loving home. All sponsorships and donations go towards the medical needs, vaccinations, and daily care and feeding of our animals. Please help us help them! For more information about Bonnie or any of the dogs of PAR, please email Pat at pat@playaanimalrescue.org.
