Winning Health: Hekab 2010 Summer Course

Our summer program this year focused on the theme of "win health"! During the program, participating children were able to learn a lot about eating right, the nutritional values that contribute to improved health, and how the body works. The activities that the children participated in were varied and fun, for both the kids and library staff.
Thanks to the excellent pre-course planning and training undertaken by our director, Leo Bermudez, the library staff were well prepared with materials and activities to help illustrate effectively to the children the importance of eating a healthy diet. They learned how the fuel we put into our bodies helps the different bodily systems function correctly, to grow strong and give them energy. The kids undertook art projects, science experiments, did cooking projects, made visits to the local produce market and to Lol-Ha restaurant, watched videos about health and nutrition, participated in yoga, and took part in daily physical exercises as part of the summer school recreation component (thanks to our intern, see below!).
The kids really had the opportunity to become immersed in the "win health" theme! We want to extend our thanks to Federico Viale who helped convert one of the children's drawings into a logo for the summer course, "we are the world," to help the kids to better identify with the summer program's theme. Overall it was a great success.
We want to extend again our thanks to the many library supporters who donated to help make it all possible!
Many thanks to Carrie, our summer intern! Mil gracias, Carrie, the University of Michigan student studying for her master's degree in Public Health & Social Work, who dedicated her summer to working at Hekab Be. While at the library, Carrie was in charge of our summer recreation program, running daily exercises and games with the kids, as part of the "win health" program theme. Carrie also helped with the daily teaching of the kids, and reorganized our health corner where we provide brochures, to provide more up-to-date and relevant health information for local families. Carrie made a huge contribution to our summer activities; we will miss her! We wish her luck in her future studies and career.
Back to School, Autumn 2010
On August 23 the local children return to school; where did the summer go? Local families must purchase a fairly lengthy list of supplies to send back to school with their children. For many families this is a hardship, as the summer months tend to be slow in terms of visitors, and many people are laid off temporarily or work reduced schedules during this time of year. Hekab Be helps out those families who participate in our programs, by providing school supplies. In return we ask that the kids and/or parents also chip in with small projects around the library such as organizing the books, helping to maintain our grounds, or other upkeep activities that make Hekab Be a welcoming and safe place for children to learn and play.
If you are coming to Akumal and want to bring supplies for Akumal schoolchildren, check our latest wishlist with supplies needed for back to school.
