Up & Down the Coast

Happy New Year! Where are we heading? And how will we get there? Our hope is that 2015 will be a year of great changes: development without destruction, promotion with protection, and respect and sustainability for all that makes this area so unique. We are stepping up the education and environmental elements of our website, and hope that you will join us by doing more to make things better and by sharing the good news of what you and others are doing to make a difference. We believe by shining a light on the positive we can encourage and inspire change ... but we need you! To see some of the good news, please scroll down to our Causes section—some people are already off to a great start to make this a great year! (photo by Paul Sánchez-Navarro Russell)

What's New

Reflected in this schedule is a week-by-week look at what Yoga en Akumal is planning. The website will stay current, so please check there for the most accurate class schedules.

To help keep up on local news, The Akumalian is still available for historical info and the newer site is AkumalNow.

An important reminder! Akumal now has a 24-hour Red Cross Ambulance Service. The emergency number is 984 802 5521. Special thanks to Marieke Brown for spearheading the fundraising efforts to make this happen, to CEA for providing dorm space for the paramedics, and to all who have supported and continue to support this.

Gynn'AK is now the Lionfish Garden. Same location, now just through the palapa and in through the garden. Specializing in a variety of lionfish dishes and Thai fusion recipes by Chef Gynna, and artisanal food. The Lionfish Garden now also makes artisanal homemade ice cream! And they claim to have hands-down the best margaritas in town, each with fresh-squeezed lime, made to order every time! They run different specials regularly and have live music on Friday nights. Owned and operated by newlyweds Chef Gynna and Frank.

Recently the Playa del Carmen Seaside Rotary Club helped to kick off the holiday season for local children with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Division I college basketball players from the United States compete for the 2014 Cancun Challenge. Seaside Rotary was responsible for transporting over 300 local public schoolchildren to watch the games, meet the players and enjoy all the action!

Christina Fiscal Calabrese, a teacher from the United States and a resident of Cristo Rey, teaches her students the importance of speaking English in order to be able to get a job in Quintana Roo, a state where international tourism dominates the labor market.  Christina received some help to bring some support and holiday cheer to the most disadvantaged families. With the collaborative efforts of Kick4Kids and KKIS (Keeping Kids In School), as well as Crystal Flauaus, Allan Lockhart and Gayle Collins, instigator of this wonderful project this year, they were able to bring the children, shoes and bags filled with toys for every single one of them, all thanks to the generosity of the people who gave donations to both organizations. Sponsor Picks of the Month

don't photograph the animals

Our four newsletter sponsors want everyone to be aware: "Don't unwittingly support the trafficking of wild animals by taking pictures with them or paying to play with them." Some of these animals are not native to the Yucatan Peninsula and, if and when they get loose or are released, they can create havoc in our ecosystems. But more importantly, this is animal cruelty!

Pets of the Month

Grace was brought to Playa Animal Rescue by one of our neighbors. She had been hit by a car and her owners didn’t really seem to care. She only had minor injuries and should have no lasting effects from the accident. She is out of quarantine now and available for adoption. Grace is very calm and sweet. She weighs about 14 kg and is spayed and up to date on all vaccinations.

Please consider adopting, or fostering one of our animals; they all deserve a loving home. All sponsorships and donations go towards the medical needs, vaccinations, and daily care and feeding of our animals. Please help us help them! For more information about Grace or any of the dogs of PAR, please email Pat at pat@playaanimalrescue.org.
