Up & Down the Coast

We're sorry we missed our May and June newsletters, but we were touched recently by two unrelated events that together have had a profound impact on our approach to and appreciation of life. First, Mike had a health scare and, though he's fine now, it was a serious wake-up call. Second, our town of Charleston suffered a blow that focused the attention of much of the world. Heartbreak came to our community with the murder of 9 upstanding citizens in their historic and sacred church. Somehow, in the emotional devastation that followed, first the families involved then our entire community came together with GRACE, LOVE and most of all FORGIVENESS! We can't tell you how proud we are to call ourselves Charlestonians, at least by choice if not by birth.

Coming out the other end of this emotional blender, we hope to share what we have learned from these events and make Sac-Be's goal be to promote and protect the Yucatán through examples of love of place and people, and by highlighting positive, non-confrontational information. We hope you'll stay with us and enjoy our new focus and format. Happy - belated - Independence Day!

The lodging possibilities in the Yucatán are nearly infinite. Combine the sheer number of hotels, villas, condos and resorts with the variety of locales, and the job of a reviewer is a lifetime gig. Here are just a few examples.

We are always encouraging our readers to help local causes through support, donations and volunteerism. We also like to use this section to share good news about those who have helped. If you have news about local causes, please share them with us.

The Mexican conservation authorities have announced a 50% reduction in capacity for the Whale Shark season. Due to the large number of participants in 2013–2014, they felt it necessary to reduce the boat/people pressure on the feeding Whale Sharks.

Kokoro

Kokoro was born about August 2014 and came to the shelter in October 2014. He was rescued by a volunteer and came to PAR when space became available. Although slightly shy at first, Kokoro warms up very quickly and is a very sweet boy who loves everyone. Kokoro is neutered and current on all vaccinations. For more information about Kokoro, or any of the dogs of Playa Animal Rescue, please email Pat at pat@playaanimalrescue.org.

spider monkey in punta laguna Mexico

Akumal Villas

This area was begun by two "chicleros" brothers in the 1950s and gained national recognition in 2002 as a National Protected Area with the official name of Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh (the home of the spider monkey and the puma). The Punta Laguna Spider Monkey Preserve needs your help. This wonderful place full of animals, just north of Cobá, is under development pressure. Please visit the monkeys and offer your support.
