Up & Down the Coast

June is bustin' out all over ...  what a gorgeous start to summer. It is our favorite time of year—whale sharks are visiting, turtles are nesting, and soon will be hatching, and, of course, school is out! We hope you all have a wonderful summer full of great memories.

What's New

Reflected in this schedule is a week-by-week look at what Yoga en Akumal is planning. The website will stay current, so please check there for the most accurate class schedules.

To help keep up on local news, The Akumalian is still available and the newest site is AkumalNow.

There is a movement in Akumal to create an Akumal No Fishing Zone. The purpose is to promote recovery of the coral reef and its fish population. The area designated runs from Yal-Ku Lagoon to the southern edge of Hotel Gran Bahía Príncipe, and 1.3 km from the shoreline seaward. Read more about it. For those who agree and would like to help, sign this petition and send by June 23 to Miguel Angel Lozano at CEA. If you are not an Akumal resident, you can put Guest and the name of the place you usually stay in Akumal, sign and date it, scan and send by email.

Kevin Graham, of Costa Maya Living, reports that electric service has arrived in Costa Maya.

Work is now underway and this is the only area south of Akumal to have electric service on the beach outside of the villages of Mahahual and Xcalak. This means all the homes in the area can have full-time electric service! According to Kevin, that makes this the perfect time to buy.

The AKUMAL INTERNATIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCY returns to Akumal in September and October of this year. Please help spread the word to any artists you know who want to spend five weeks in paradise. They are seeking an international mix of visual, literary and performing artists. Application DEADLINE is July 25. Many artistic events will be offered for locals and tourists during the residency. To help support, please contact residency director Kim Schultz at akumalartistresidency@gmail.com. And for more information see the website www.akumalresidency.com.

Pets of the Month

Chaca

This is adorable little Chaca. She and her sister, Chica, were rescued from death row at the pound in Playa del Carmen two years ago. She is approximately 3 years old and only knee high in height. She has a bubbly, friendly personality and likes everyone. She'd make a great addition to any family and if someone would like to adopt both sisters, even better! They love each other very much and are not usually apart. She has waited a long time now to find a home; could it be with you? Visit Tierra de Animales.

Zeus

Zeus was born about August 2010. Zeus is a very resilient street dog who was living near the shelter for a long time. But when PAR discovered that Zeus was extremely ill, Dr. Mauricio decided to bring him in for treatment. After being in Dr. Mau’s care for a period, Zeus was able to regain his strength, but it was discovered that Zeus has been suffering from an advanced case of heartworm. He has completed his treatments and is a happy boy! (On a side note, treatments of this scale are very costly.) Zeus is very friendly with people and he will be the best companion! If you would like more information about Zeus, or any of the other dogs of Playa Animal Rescue, please contact Pat at pat@playaanimalrescue.org.

Tomasa

Tomasa is an adult female about 2 years old. She came to Coco's with 5 newborn babies who have now all been adopted. She is still waiting for her forever home. Visit Coco's Cat Rescue to learn more.

ViDAS Spay & Neuter Clinic – The next clinic will be Aug 8–13 in Playa del Carmen, exact location to be decided.
