La Buena Vida Restaurant Review January 2010

Whether you are in Akumal for a short day visit or an extended vacation, you will want to check out this eclectic bar and restaurant. Located on Half Moon Bay in Akumal it offers a wide variety of feel and flavors that are sure to please everyone.

During the day it is a great spot to sit to enjoy the beach and have a light fare and libation or two. You can choose from sitting near the beach, swinging at the bar or literally hanging out in a crow's nest. The menu selection for lunch and appetizers is extensive; everything we have tried has been very good and the portions are large.

The downstairs bar stays open at night and the upstairs restaurant, open only for dinner, is a very popular spot. Having a more elegant setting, it combines the feel of being in Robinson Crusoe's tree house with Hemingway chic, and is a unique experience. The menu is extensive and the service is very good. The evening we ate there, there were five of us and one woman had her heart set on the hamburger she had seen someone enjoy earlier in the day. She spoke to the waiter, he checked with the kitchen, and they were able to prepare her request.

Each time I have eaten here at night, someone has ordered one of their specialty coffee drinks. It is a show to watch and delightful to drink. With the sun setting out the back of the restaurant over the mangroves and the moon rising over the bay, this is a lovely spot to dine. The upstairs setting captures the trade winds and adds to the ambiance.

This is also a popular spot for weddings and special occasions. One of the most popular annual events is their Halloween Bash. If you happen to be in the area during Halloween, this is not to be missed. The locals and visitors alike come out in full costume and festive moods. Even if you don't dress up, it is worth coming to see the show!
