Amigos de Sian Ka'an proudly announces the recent launch of Maya Ka'an, the new ecotourism destination of Quintana Roo, and first of its kind in Mexico. This event took place in the frame of the Mexican Tourism Tianguis in Cancun. Maya Ka'an is designed to facilitate the conservation of Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, while promoting the sustainable development of local communities of central Quintana Roo. Maya Ka'an improves the commercial viability of local ecotourism projects already operating, and represents a model to demonstrate that low-density, nature- and culture-oriented tourism is a real alternative of environmental-friendly development. Maya Ka'an diversifies Quintana Roo's tourism options and offers a unique experience to the rest of Mexico and the world.
Maya Ka'an, a destination that opens infinite opportunities in the future, is a concept promoted by Amigos de Sian Ka'an, the Mesoamerican Reef Tourism Initiative (MARTI), and the Riviera Maya Promotion Trust. It was made possible with the generous funding provided by The Multilateral Investment Fund of the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB - MIF), UNDP Small Grants Program, Fundemex, Microsoft, Fundación ADO, Alianza WWF – Fundación Carlos Slim, Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, and The Nature Conservancy.
The success of Maya Ka'an is certainly based on the leadership and work of the Secretaries of Tourism of Quintana Roo and México, the National Commission for Protected Areas, the Secretary of the Environment Quintana Roo, the Municipalities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Tulum and José María Morelos, and, above all, the 17 locally based tour operators.
Maya Ka'an starts with a solid foundation based on environmental, social and financial criteria; good practices manuals; financial guides; market studies; new tourism products; promotion strategies; and the design of a robust trademark to ensure the commercial success of this low-impact destination. This framework is the result of the work of dozens of very highly qualified consultants, the MARTI partners, and the Amigos de Sian Ka'an team coordinated by Vicente Ferreyra.
I invite you to discover much more about Maya Ka'an in this video produced by our collaborator, Rodrigo Rosales, www.youtube.com/watch?v=sirasuV-lm4 and in the webpage where you will find links to our social networks and get in direct contact with the local tourism companies:
