Special Thanks to Nancy Poor, who's jewelry was for sale at Lolha Happy Hour Friday, November 30. The Women In Wellness and a few others raised $360 USD for CEA. And as if they were saying thanks, a turtle nest was released.

2009 Turtle Season is coming to an end with just a few nests still waiting to hatch. CEA announced its turtle numbers for Akumal:

Loggerhead: 102
Green: 100
Loggerhead: 9010
Green: 9717

Lionfish - Report any sightings of the Lionfish to the closest dive center or directly to Centro Ecológico Akumal. In your report include the time, exact location and size of the animal, if possible. Do not attempt to capture it, as they release toxins that could be life threatening.

What's New
US census bag

IF you are an American 50 years or older living in Mexico, either on a part time or full time basis, the International Community Foundation would appreciate your assistance in completing a survey. For each survey completed by a qualified survey respondent, the International Community Foundation will donate $3.00 to a Mexican charity of your choice.

Why is the research important? In 2010 the U.S. Census will begin, yet there are no plans to include U.S. expatriates in the upcoming census count.  As the number of Americans in Mexico grows, so too will their healthcare needs, so there is a pressing need for medical care received in Mexico to be reimbursable under Medicare.  Yet this will require changes in U.S. health care policy.  Similarly in Mexico there is a need for Mexican policymakers to better understand what key preferences draw Americans to Mexican coastal communities and what factors could cause them to leave? learn more

Halloween party in Akumal

Question for our readers: What do a biker chic, Scottish lad, deviled egg, ABBA, toxic waste, a lounge singer, Gilligan and the Castaways, Frida Khalo and vampires all have in common? Of course they were just a few of the folks who showed up at La Buena Vida's Annual Halloween Party. A large thunder storm blew through just as the costumes were being judged. The band had to stop but the party certainly did not. The lightning and torrential down pour only added to the ambiance. A great time was had by all. And once again the staff at La Buena Vida outdid themselves.

La Lunita in Akumal has announced that the restaurant will be open for lunch, November-April.

Lucy's in Akumal

Finally, Mario of Mario's Pizza and Lucy of Lucy and Lucy's Too have joined forces to work together to market their restaurants in the Akumal Pueblo. With the new over pass it is easier than ever to get there. We want to encourage all of you to check it out. Team work is a wonderful thing and we commend them on their efforts. Best of luck.

Share your very first memory...
Paul Sanchez-Navarro remembered: "1979, fun bumpy road from Cancun to Tulum, in a rented VW bug, it was great, and who would have thought I'd be working here.

Another friend recalled: Joe and I discovered Akumal on our honeymoon 25 years ago next week. Sharing a bottle of brandy, while sitting in under the palm trees on la playa one dark night, we discovered why all the VW bugs had dents in their roofs.

Great Idea - Lucy James, animal advocate and restauranteur came up with a great idea. Each month we are going to tell you about an animal that needs your help. What stirred Lucy to suggest this was a small female dog that I ran across at a small, roadside restaurant near Muyil. Her eyes were so badly infected that she could barely see and she was pacing back and forth along the highway. I was out of cell phone range and unable to contact anyone. I was also flying out the next day so was limited in how I could help. That evening at a party I mentioned to several people the plight of this dog. This is just one of many stories and many animals. The outcome is that Sherwood and Bob Anders are going to try to pick up the dog and get her treated. Hopefully she will be up for adoption soon. So if you know of an animal you would like to have selected please send us the information. It may be through one of the great organizations in the area or another you personally know about.
