Up & Down the Coast

Happy Thanksgiving to all our readers! It is with a grateful, but saddened, heart that we dedicate this issue to two beloved Akumalians who truly will be missed. Ani Nicoll passed away on November 2 from complications after surgery. She was a devoted friend, animal lover, and known for her fighting spirit and great sense of humor! We didn't know her well but we know many of our contributors and supporters loved her deeply. Condolences to friends and family.

David Poor died unexpectedly on November 6 after suffering a stroke. For those who knew David it's not surprising that he donated his organs so that others might benefit from his passing. As one of Akumal's strongest advocates, David left this little slice of paradise better off than he found it. He was also a generous supporter of Sac-Be.com, for which we will be forever grateful.

We thank Sherwood Anders who put it best when she wrote: "The heavens are a lot brighter tonight, but our lives, and especially Akumal, have lost one of its most dazzling stars. David was larger than life, and lived it to the fullest. He was brilliant both intellectually and in personality–he was generous, loving, funny, caring, hard working and magnanimous. Our hearts and our thoughts are with Nancy, Shep, Sidney, Rachel, and Liza and their families. This is how we will always remember David–in a colorful, tropical shirt, and with a big smile on his face. Thank you for all that you brought to our lives, all of the people that you brought into them, and all that you did for Akumal. We are so proud and honored to have you as our friend. Descansa en paz–enjoy Happy Hour on the big beach in the sky."

This Thanksgiving, let's remember those whom we have lost, not with sadness for losing them, but with thanks that we had them in our lives, however briefly.

Pets of the Month

Kiara

Kiara was born about October of 2011 and arrived at Playa Animal Rescue in October 2012. She weighs about 13 kg (29 pounds). She was surrendered to PAR by a local vet who didn't want to euthanize her. Kiara had an operation on her leg, and the result was not perfect so her owners no longer wanted her, and asked the vet to put her down. Kiara doesn't let the fact that her leg isn't perfect bother her; just try to keep up with her! She is a sweet and loving little dog, just waiting for the perfect family to adopt her! If you would like more information about Kiara or any of the dogs of Playa Animal Rescue, please email info@playaanimalrescue.org.

Go to Coco's Cat Rescue to learn about adopting a cat or kitten. An updated list is also available on their Facebook page.
