Up & Down the Coast

Time to Fall Back! In most of Mexico, DST ends on Sunday, October 28. Do not forget to turn the clocks back one hour.

For the U.S., and only the U.S., DST ends on the first Sunday in November—November 4—as the clocks are set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. local daylight time, which becomes 1:00 a.m. local standard time.

Speaking of time, the holidays are coming and it is the time to give. What better way to do that than with gifts that not only bring pleasure to those receiving them but also help a great cause. Check out some of the ways you can celebrate Christmas or Chanukah with a cause.

Wanting to spend Christmas on Half Moon Bay in Akumal? It's not too late. We booked the entire Villas Flamingo and due to circumstances are not able to use all the villas; contact us for more information. Dates are December 22–29, 2012.

Looking for a tour, a restaurant, shopping or accommodations? It is all here, and yours to download for FREE. Akumal Villas has developed a new app that will help their guests, owners and anyone looking to find more information about the area. Read More.

Reflected in this schedule is a week-by-week look at what Yoga en Akumal is planning. The website will stay current, so please check there for the most accurate class schedules. Looking ahead to November, please mark your calendars for "Cultivating the Witness: WAKE UP!" This one-day jungle retreat gives the opportunity to investigate the eyes we see through.

A reminder, for those of you who love Akumal, is that The Akumalian is the best way to keep up on comings, goings, and lots of information about happenings.

There's a new park planned for Puerto Morelos – Xenote– by the owners of Xcaret and Xel-Há.

A couple of points of interest to those traveling from Cancun to Mahahual:

1. At the present time there is no ADO bus service to Mahahual. If traveling by public transportation, you will need to catch the Mayab bus that leaves from the Cancun bus terminal or from the PDC bus terminal on Fifth Avenue. They run frequently (about every hour) ... but they do not post their schedules online. From there you will need to disembark at Limones and take a taxi to your destination in Mahahual.

2. There is no longer an HSBC bank machine in Mahahual and the private ATM machines are charging as much as 80 pesos per transaction. You would be wise to use a "bank" machine in PdC, Tulum or Felipe Carillo Puerto, if possible.

Regarding the Tampa Bay to Progreso ferry, Bruce Nierenberg, CEO of United Caribbean Lines, tells The Akumalian, "We are working hard to get the ferry service up and running. Our target is for next summer. We expect to have our schedules for the public by the end of the year. We are anticipating two trips a week from Florida to the Yucatan, a mid-week and a weekend."

We get many questions about how to adopt an animal. Here is an easy FAQ from Playa Animal Rescue. PAR would like to remind people that they need to raise 25,000 pesos to pay off their car, which is of vital importance. Also, Congratulations PAR on your 501(c)(3)! U.S. donations are now tax deductible, and they are celebrating their 1 year anniversary this month!

Pets of the Month

Her name is Ariel and she is 4 months old. After a failed adoption she is still looking for her forever home! Coco's Cat Rescue is looking for someone responsible to adopt Ariel.

Homero was rescued by Tierra de Animales. He is the cutest little guy! He is like a golden retriever who stopped growing, with short legs and a small frame! He is approximately 30 pounds, 6-7 years old, with a great, happy personality, and would love to spend his golden years in a nice home! Even though he is a little older, he still has a "puppy" face! He was rescued from a yard where he was tied up 24 hours a day with no attention from anyone. He would make a great companion and addition to any family, and doesn't need a lot of physical activity.

Fuerte is a survivor. She has survived a machete attack, heartworm, and TVT cancer. She just got a clean bill of health from the vets!! She's currently in a foster home, waiting for her forever home. To learn more about adopting or fostering, please contact Playa Animal Rescue.
