Tasha's Story

by Jan from Peanut Animal Shelter April, 2008

We were, of course, in total agreement before we left for Mexico. We love the Peanut Pet Shelter. We admire Andy and Jen more than we can ever put into words for their passion to help the less fortunate animals in Playa del Carmen. But, we already have two large dogs, and can't fit a third into our life right now. Really hard to walk three dogs on leash when you only have two hands. So, we will support the shelter in any way we can. Wash puppies, raise money, beg, and mule said begged supplies, but we simply cannot take a dog home with us. We are stronger than that, of course we are! Or rather, we were until just about this moment.

It is indeed possible to fall in love in a heartbeat. Tasha was so frail looking, so thin, but at the same time so game to run and play with all her shelter mates. And, she was very clear on what was hers and not to be shared, particularly food. Despite what she had been through, all she appeared to want was a cozy lap to cuddle in and someone to pet and love her .....nonstop.

So, the journey begins. Andy was so helpful helping us get ready to bring Tasha home, we really relied on him to make it happen. I couldn't face going home without her. To bring a dog home from Playa is so much easier than you would think. Really the only hang-up appears to be weather. Each airline has different guidelines. Our carrier Northwest will not board a dog as cargo if the temperature is warmer than 85F or colder than 10F at any point on your route. I think we just squeaked by on both ends of that spectrum. Tasha took the trip like the tough little girl she is, not a whimper. The flight went off without a hitch, and all the staff at Northwest took such good care of her. From the pilot to the baggage handlers. In fact, the flight attendants were so pleased with our efforts to adopt Tasha, we ate and drank on them for the flight home!

The look on Tasha's face when we first stepped out of the airport was priceless. " what the heck kind of sand is this.... it's cold" She toughed it out though and she was on her way to her new home at last.

She has settled in very well and loves her new brother and sister.

She has had some health issues, and after several trips to the vet, and one very long day at Iowa Sate University Vet Hospital, she is on the road to recovery. Tasha has EPI. it is a condition involving the Pancreas and it's inability to create the enzymes that aid food digestion. She will need to take medication, but the condition can be controlled easily. Since diagnosis, she has put on 5 pounds, and needs only another 4 or 5 pounds to be at her ideal weight. Let me add, that Andy and Jen take such good care of the shelter dogs. Every vet we saw with Tasha commented on her great overall condition despite her health issues. For Andy and Jen to keep her going in spite of her inability to absorb nutrients was not an easy task, but they did it! And, she was totally parasite free, that one really impressed all the Vet's, way to go Peanut Pet Shelter!!!!!!

Visit the shelter when you are in Playa, it's uplifting and fun! Support the shelter if you are able. Andy and Jen do so much with so little. Bring a dog home, you won't regret it, I can promise you that.
