Vista del Mar Review January 2010

It had been several days away from the Caribbean coast and many hours on some extremely small, desolate roads. We had decided to meander back to the coast rather than take the more popular main roads. It made for a wonderful trip and it kept the effects of Hurricane Ida at bay for most of the day. However, we arrived in Akumal tired and drenched as we finally caught up with the heavy rains, between Tulúm and Akumal.

All of the weariness disappeared as we opened the door to our 3-bedroom condo. It was bright and colorful with wonderful hints of local art filling the place. Immediately your eye is drawn through the condo past the dining area and kitchen and out to Half Moon Bay. Ida had created quite a spectacular scene with unusually high waves and huge cloud formations just past the coral reef.

The condo is located directly on the beach in Half Moon Bay. At Vista del Mar you have your choice of small, efficient hotel rooms or 2- and 3-bedroom condos. All of them are located directly on the beach. There is a pool located between the accommodations and La Buena Vida Restaurant; that is also where you will find the dive shop. Across the street from La Buena Vida, and at the end of the hotel, are shops where you will find gifts, souvenirs, sundries and more.

Half Moon Bay is a great location, especially if you want to be right in the middle of Akumal—on one side you have Yal-Ku Lagoon and on the other is Akumal Playa.

The condo was impeccably clean and has a fully equipped kitchen with a view of the bay and a large bar with stools. The subtle touches of local artists enhance its charm. The open layout makes it perfect for entertaining. The design also makes it wonderful for air flow, so most of the time you wouldn't need to use the air conditioning, though it is available. Each bedroom has its own private bath and the layout gives everyone lots of privacy and room. This would be a perfect place for larger families or two or three couples.

The master bedroom is located towards the front and has shutters that can be opened up to bring in the view or closed for privacy. The master bath has a shower as well as Jacuzzi tub.

There is also WiFi in the condos, though not in the hotel rooms. And TVs are in both. I have never thought about TVs while in Akumal but the friend I was traveling with was thrilled to be able to relax, listen to the surf and watch TV, something she admitted she had missed.

Since this was my last night in Akumal for this trip I decided to treat myself to a special sunrise massage. The condo has its own private deck which is perfect for just this sort of thing. Ida had moved away during the night, leaving the morning even more invigorating, like Mother Nature had just given it a good washing. My masseur, Juan, arrived just as the sky was starting to lighten and set up his table on the deck. With special oils by Maya Breeze, sounds of the surf, and the soft trade winds blowing, I had one of the most amazing mornings of my life and most memorable massages. I highly recommend you treat yourself to a massage and a morning wake-up at Vista del Mar! Every morning is wonderful if you are waking up steps from Half Moon Bay but this one was the crème de la crème.
