Chaak Tun Cenote

by Lydia Linton Pontius

We get more inquiries about Chaak Tun than any other place we list. It might be because there is not a lot of information about it, so we made a point of visiting it while we were in Playa del Carmen.

Located just west of the city in the ejido section, it is a gorgeous jungle setting which makes you think you are far away from the hustle and bustle of the ever-growing Playa. As you leave the city, keep driving west on Av. Juarez until you come to the curve in the road—YOU'RE THERE. Located on your right, it has a very simple entrance and is not all glitzy and touristy.

We were given a tour and wished we had the time to experience more in person. We tried to squeeze it in the next morning but it just didn't work out.

I highly recommend this place, especially for people who are staying in Playa and want to experience the jungle, cenotes, underground caves and a true Maya experience and not have to travel far.

You have several options and price ranges. $360 pesos, about $30 US dollars, includes a two-hour snorkeling tour with equipment and one drink. You can add a box lunch for $450 pesos. Want the full experience? Go for the Shaman package, which includes a temazcal (sweat lodge) built down in one of the open caves, a Shaman blessing and a box lunch, for $750 pesos. These prices do not include transportation, but taxis can get you here easily or you can call to make arrangements for transportation.

Equipment includes snorkel gear, helmet and life vest. We recommend comfortable water shoes and climbing shoes. The paths are cleared but in a very natural state, and wind throughout the property. You will be climbing into caves as well as swimming in the underground river system. Immerse into the depths of the earth or, as the Maya referred to it, the underworld "Xibalba" and wander through the cooling waters among the stalagmites and stalactites.

If you go, please let them know Sac-Be sent you! It is probably the most natural setting still around Playa, and if you don't get enough of caves during your day trip, visit the Alux Restaurant at night.
