Casa de Los Venados, Valladolid, Yucatan
Casa de los Venados │ Oficial Site is a privately owned home in Valladolid and a national cultural tourism asset with the largest museum-quality collection of Mexican folk art - 3,000+ pieces in their personal collection. The home itself is one of the oldest city haciendas and it took the owners over 8 years to renovate it and make it liveable. It houses 10 private suites, all 2 story with private living rooms, bedrooms, outdoor space and 2 full baths. Each of these rooms along, with the open air courtyard and hallways, is chock full of amazing artwork. It is no exaggeration to say you cannot take it all in during one visit.
They offer 4 private tours of the home each day. We chose the early morning tour. The tour-guide is well informed and encourages people to ask any questions they might have. The morning we visited we were able to meet the owners, John and Dorianne, a gracious and very interesting couple. They explained to us that the money collected from donations during the tours is all used for local charity work. The month we were there they were buying and distributing blankets to locals in need.
As a lover of hacienda style homes, I was overwhelmed by the architecture and the openness of their courtyard. Not only is it beautifully renovated and true to its style, but they managed to add an amazing swimming pool with water falls and a glass bridge. It took all the restraint I had not to dive in.
My favorite room was the kitchen/ dining area. This kitchen was designed to be a dream come true for any chef or want-to-be chef. And the huge dining area was substantial enough to host the most amazing dinners. Even the place settings were a piece of art.
One can’t help but admire the vision this couple had to create such a home and what an outstanding appreciation for Mexican folkart! Next time you visit Valladolid you must make this a priority, you won’t be disappointed. I know we’ll be back many more times. Casa Venado is true gem of a place with a heart of gold, truly a national treasure.
